Songs of Power and Spirit

RISKS

The child has made me vulnerable.

Tottering like a tiny rubber-legged clown,
The steps he takes bring falls and sometimes
   tears from him and always
   fears from me.

For my sake I would cushion his advances,
Gather him up and rock him close a day or two yet.

Instead, I laugh and call him "brave" or "daring",
the better to prepare us for the price
we both must pay for growing up.
